Mark Lajal, who just lost to Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the opening round of the Wimbledon tournament, will host the artistic Frenchman Gaël Monfils (currently ATP 33), who has won the hearts of audiences all over the world, at the Unibet Arena on November 21. Tickets are on sale at Piletitasku.ee.
Lajal admits that the match with Monfils is a big challenge and an undertaking that injects competitive excitement.
"There are both positive and negative emotions in me at the moment. Mostly positive, though. I wouldn't say I surprised myself, but I proved to myself that I could play against the best players in the world in a big tournament. I knew I could do it," Lajal shared comments after a tense match against Alcaraz on Wimbledon lawn.
Lajal admitted that before the match with Alcaraz, he got quite nervous in the corridors of Wimbledon. "I saw that there was a full house of people and I liked it so much! I got particularly nervous during the warm-up, but I could see that Alcaraz was also tense. I realized I wasn't the only one. In the first set, he couldn't get the first serve in because of that."
Thousands of people are waiting for Lajal in the stands in November in Tallinn when he will face Monfils, the former No. 6 racket in the world. The pinnacle of the Frenchman's career so far is the semifinals at the French Open in 2008 and the US Open in 2016. In addition, he has played in the ATP1000 final three times, twice in Paris and once in Monte Carlo.
Born on September 1, 1986, Monfils received the title of Rookie of the Year in the ATP series in 2005. He has won 12 first places on the ATP Tour. He is currently one of only eight active tennis players in the world to have won more than 550 matches in his professional career. During his career, he has managed to repeatedly defeat such big names in tennis as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Tennis portal Tie Breaks Tens describes Monfils as a player with a unique and fun style of play. "He relies on consistency and accurate ball placement to be one of the top men's tennis players in the world. Monfils is nicknamed La Monf, or sometimes Sliderman, due to his unusual sliding technique on the court. He is a crowd favorite known for his incredible trick shots and ability to reach every ball through his elasticity, reminiscent of Boris Becker. Her career highlights include reaching the semifinals of two Grand Slam singles matches. Monfils was the junior world number one and won all four major junior Grand Slams. Monfils considers Arthur Ashe to be his favorite player, and when he is not on the tennis court, he plays basketball."
In November 2023, Delfi Media organized the first big tennis night when Anett Kontaveit played her exit match against Ons Jauber.
